The Development of New Disciplines

No other school of the arts can match the Tisch School Of The Arts’ record of innovation in establishing academic programs in exciting new fields. The Departments of Cinema Studies, Performance Studies, and Musical Theatre Writing were the first of their kind in the nation.  The Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) was the first of its kind to be anchored within a school of the arts rather than a science or technology institution; work done in the program has resulted in practical applications for museums, hospitals, and other nonprofit organizations.  Upcoming initiatives include the new Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music, which will approach recorded music as an artistic discipline and will consider the record producer as a creative artist; and a new master’s degree program in Moving Image Archiving and Preservation, an increasingly important field since the nation has already lost forever 50% of the films made before World War II because of the fragility of the recording media that were used.
